Wedding Dress Preservation by Mail.

REQUEST AN ESTIMATE
Since 1953
Ivory silk and lace wedding gown folded in acid-free tissue in a preservation box

Your wedding dress is in the closet, and you're worried about stains, yellowing or damage if you ship it away. Without a nearby bridal cleaning specialist, it's hard to know who to trust with something irreplaceable. Meanwhile, champagne, perspiration and body oils can darken over time, and unsuitable storage can leave lasting creases or discoloration. A garment bag keeps dust off; it doesn't remove hidden residues or protect delicate folds.

At Margaret's Cleaners, our wedding dress preservation by mail gives you access to specialist care anywhere in the U.S. Through CleanByMail®, we'll explain shipping and arrange cleaning and preservation. Call (858) 454-2375 or contact us to get started.

Worried your wedding dress won't survive the years ahead?

With professional cleaning and suitable storage, you can protect your gown against preventable deterioration.

Those faint sugary spills and body oils may become brown marks (source). Ordinary cardboard can introduce acids, plastic can trap moisture under unsuitable conditions, and tight folds can stress fragile fabric.

Through our nationwide service, you can preserve your gown from anywhere, whether you hope to pass it to a daughter or granddaughter or keep it as a memory of your day.

How does our mail-in wedding dress preservation process work?

You request an estimate and send your gown with the required paperwork; we contact you when it arrives before proceeding.

  • Contact us. Request an estimate through our CleanByMail page, with photos if helpful. We also offer video consultations. You don't need a prior arrangement to use UPS CleanByMail.
  • Pack and ship. Include the appropriate request form, your quote and gown. Use the UPS form for UPS shipping or the Other Carrier Request Form for another carrier. Send your package to our main plant at 5150 Convoy Street, San Diego, CA 92111.
  • Inspection and assessment. We document your gown's condition and examine its fabric, trim and problem areas. An expert contacts you upon arrival. Before we begin work, we need your order and verified credit card information.
  • Specialized cleaning. We assess stains and choose care suited to your gown's materials.
  • Preservation and return. We prepare your gown for preservation and pack it in custom-developed shipping containers. We use UPS Ground for return shipping unless otherwise specified.

Is it safe to mail my wedding dress?

Yes, mailing your gown is a practical way to access specialist care when you pack it correctly and use a trackable, insured carrier service. Shipping still carries risk. Careful preparation matters.

How to protect your gown in transit

Photograph your gown, use a sturdy box, and keep tracking information and receipts. On your request form, record the declared value and delivery preferences. Complimentary insurance covers up to $2,500, and you can declare a higher value for about $1 per $100; review the coverage terms and exclusions.

We include complimentary shipping with our wedding gown preservation services; you'll pay separately for expedited inbound shipping.

What to do if a package is damaged

Photograph the box and visible damage, keep all packaging, contact us immediately, and file a carrier claim. You'll also need to preserve shipping records and follow inspection instructions.

How do we clean silk, lace, beading and other delicate fabrics?

We choose care based on your gown's fabric and trim, review care labels, and test inconspicuous areas to see how the materials respond.

Silk and satin

With silk, we watch for water spots and yellowing that need careful treatment. Satin is a weave, not a fiber, so we check fiber content before choosing treatment.

Lace and embroidery

We handle open lace and raised embroidery gently because they can snag or distort. Around seams and worn areas, fine threads need particular care.

Beading, sequins and embellishments

We check decorations for glue as well as stitching. Because cleaning agents can affect adhesives or finishes, we test to identify vulnerabilities before choosing care.

Tulle, organza and chiffon

With these sheer materials, we account for the risk of tears or loss of shape. We examine layered construction and vulnerable edges alongside visible surfaces.

What does museum-quality preservation actually mean?

By museum-quality preservation, we mean thorough cleaning followed by storage in archival, acid-free materials chosen to reduce yellowing and fabric stress. You shouldn't read the term as a universal certification or a promise that your gown can't age.

Acid-free materials explained

We use suitable archival materials because ordinary paper and cardboard may introduce acids as they age (source). With archival tissue, we cushion folds and reduce sharp creases.

Your preservation box limits light and dust exposure, but you'll still need good household storage and pest prevention.

Sealed vs. breathable storage

With air-tight sealed preservation, you limit air exchange but need careful moisture control. With breathable storage, you allow air exchange but still need protection from humidity and contaminants.

Neither option can make up for a damp storage location. Ask us about preservation options and appropriate long-term storage.

Are stain removal and repairs included?

We include stain treatment in our cleaning and assess repair needs during inspection. Then we'll explain recommended work rather than assume your dress needs every service.

Visible and invisible stains

You can usually see hem dirt and neckline makeup. Champagne, sugary drinks and perspiration may leave less obvious residues that darken later. Tell us about spills even if you can't see them now.

Minor repairs

We look for loose beads, split seams and damaged hems that need attention before storage. After inspection, we'll explain any repair needs so you understand the scope of care.

How should I prepare my wedding dress before mailing it?

Remove accessories, document stains, fold gently, and pack your gown in a sturdy box with clean, soft padding.

Pre-shipping checklist

  • Remove the plastic garment bag.
  • Avoid home spot-cleaning; you may spread stains or affect finishes.
  • Note stain locations and likely causes, such as wine, grass or makeup.
  • Photograph the front, back, hem and existing damage.
  • Cushion folds with clean white, preferably acid-free tissue or clean white cotton.
  • Remove detachable accessories; send veils or other pieces only if you want us to preserve them too, and list them.
  • Choose a sturdy box that closes without compressing your gown.
  • Include your quote and completed carrier-specific request form.

Ask us how to support a heavily embellished skirt or long train.

Is mail-in preservation better than using a local dry cleaner?

With mail-in service, you can reach a wedding gown specialist wherever you live, rather than settling for whichever cleaner is closest.

Compare delicate-fabric experience, inspection practices and preservation materials rather than choosing solely by proximity. Ask who'll handle your gown and how they'll explain proposed care.

Through CleanByMail, you can access our specialist care without driving to our Southern California locations. Request an estimate remotely and ship through your chosen carrier.

How long does it take, and what will I receive?

Your timing depends on fabric, stains, repairs and shipping; you'll receive your cleaned gown in preservation packaging. We'll discuss your order before promising a completion date. Need it for an anniversary, portrait session or family occasion? Mention that when you request your estimate.

When to send your gown

Send your gown as soon after the wedding as practical, before residues have more time to set. Tell us about any required return date. If you've already stored the dress for years, describe its condition and any previous cleaning when you inquire.

Unboxing your preserved dress

You'll receive your cleaned gown carefully folded with protective tissue in preservation packaging. Follow the supplied handling instructions and choose a cool, dry, dark location. Avoid the attic, basement or garage. Before you put the box away, choose a spot safe from leaks and heavy objects.

Why trust Margaret's Cleaners with your wedding dress?

With more than 70 years of experience as a Five Star Certified Cleaner, we provide fabric-specific care, careful inspection and archival preservation materials through our nationwide mail-in service. Before you ship, you deserve clear guidance about stains, repairs and packaging.

We base recommended care on your gown's materials and condition. Every dress needs its own assessment. Whether your gown is silk, delicate lace or heavily embellished, ask us about handling before work begins.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to mail my wedding dress for preservation?

Yes, if you pack it properly and use a trackable, insured carrier service, though shipping carries risk. Photograph your gown, declare its value, and retain receipts and tracking details. Review coverage terms and exclusions. Ask us before sending a gown that needs special packing support.

How much does mail-in wedding dress preservation cost?

Your cost depends on fabric, size, detailing, stains and repairs. We provide a personalized quote rather than charge one price for every dress. Request an estimate through CleanByMail; photographs can help us understand the care you need.

What's the difference between standard and museum-quality preservation?

With museum-quality preservation, you generally get thorough cleaning followed by archival, acid-free tissue and protective boxing rather than ordinary packaging. We use these materials to help reduce storage-related yellowing and hard creases. You shouldn't treat the term as a universal standard, so ask about materials, preparation and storage instructions.

Can you remove old or yellowed stains?

We may improve older or oxidized stains with professional treatment, but your results depend on fabric, stain type and age. After assessing your gown, we can discuss treatment; we can't promise complete removal. Send your dress promptly so we can address residues before further aging.

How should I store my preserved wedding dress at home?

Choose a cool, dry, dark location with a stable temperature, such as an interior closet or suitable space under a bed. We recommend avoiding attics, basements and garages. Keep your box off concrete floors, handle your gown with clean hands, and follow the supplied storage guidance.
